    October 29, 2013

Law students listen to information about the new Washington, D.C., externship program. The College of Law has one of the longest running and most respected Law in London programs in the country, and now law students can add Washington, DC, to the list of programs for experiential learning.

Beginning in January 2014, 25 second- and third-year law students can participate in a program that combines professional experience with unique coursework to develop an understanding of how lawyers function in our nation’s capital. Externship placements allow students to work as part of a legal team in a variety of different environments and are essential for students pursuing a law or joint-degree. In a weekly course, taught by Professor Terry L. Turnipseed, who is leading the program, students will study legal issues specific to DC practice and also write a substantive research paper on a topic related to federal regulation or a legislative topic or process.

“The new Syracuse Law Semester in DC Program will provide an elite professional and educational experience in a job market in which many of our students aspire to pursue careers,” says Turnipseed. “We have an exceptional group of DC-area alumni that have proved to be invaluable assets to help launch this program and foster relationships that are critical to new attorneys.”

A variety of work experiences await law students who will arrive in January 2014. From federal government to nonprofit to judicial and political positions, there are several dozen opportunities to help prepare students for the legal profession, Turnipseed says. A few of the opportunities include the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Public Defender Service for DC, Federal Bureau of Investigation and NASA.

The Syracuse Law Semester in DC Program is offered to 25 law students for summer, fall and spring semesters.
